Monroe City School Becomes Blue Jeans Community Center

The old Monroe City School stands at 1242 Main Street, Monroe City, Indiana. The main part of the structure, showing the pillared front entrance, was built in 1910. The addition, plus gymnasium was added in 1936. Another building had been used as Monroe City School before this one, so there are records of Monroe City graduates from 1905 through 1967.

When the building closed as Monroe City School, it was used for the South Knox Elementary School.

In 1999, the doors once again closed as a school. The beloved old building became home to the BlueJeans Community Center.

The name BlueJeans is from the Honorable Govenor James D. “BlueJeans” Williams. The Govenor was from this community and being a country boy at heart, acquired this nickname from wearing home made bluejeans to the Govenor’s office. The Monroe City Bluejeans basketball team carried his nickname, and the community center continues to honor him as well.

Fall
Posted by bjcc on Tuesday, October 21 @ 15:01:56 CDT (99 reads)

Fall is here. We are having beautiful Fall weather. Warm days and chilly nights. The leaves are starting to have some color and are begining to look really pretty. Farmers are trying to get all their crops picked. They had such a late start this Spring that there is still lots of crops in the Fields left to pick. Everyone is getting ready for Halloween. Many people have decorations up. Our Haunted House here at the Center will be October 30.

Fall Festival
Posted by bjcc on Friday, October 17 @ 12:37:57 CDT (134 reads)

The Fall Festival is history for another year. Most everything went fairly smooth. The food was delicious and plentiful. Kids seemed to enjoy the inflatables. There was a huge turnout for our first ever Dog show. Lots of items were sold in the Country Store and their annex the outside Tent. Entertainment was really good. We had good music both nights plus the ropers. Boy those kids can sure jump rope. Fire works as in past years was spectacular and could be viewed from several local homes. Sunday was parade day and I was getting very nervous as it was raining; but by 1:30 the skies cleared and I can still brag “It has never rained on my Parade”. We had entries of all kinds from dirt bikes with training wheels to Elvis; plus a Family with 14 tractors.

Now is the time for us to start thinking about next year. We really would like your input and ideas.

Marching Band

Marching Band

The Kids who play sports seem to get a lot of recognition. But have you ever thought of all the physical effort it takes to be in the marching band?  It also takes a lot of dedication. The band kids have a hard time finding a Summer Job that will accommodate Band practice. They practice several evenings during the summer then there is BAND CAMP. This year camp was held the last week in July; 12 noon until 9PM. This just happened to be the hottest week we have had all year. I had trouble handling the heat and humidity when I went out to talk to the Band Director around 7 in the evening. The kids were marching like it was no big deal. I know some of these kids had put in at least a half days work in the melon fields or elsewhere before coming to camp. I don’t think band kids get enough recognition. So I’m trying to let people know the Band deserves just as much honor as the Sports teams. Our South Knox Marching Spartans, or as they are known as

“The Spartan Pride Marching Band”

has already started marching season and winning honors. They were First place in their class at the Indiana State Fair Band Day August 5. The Spartan Pride was invited back to perform in exhibition later that evening. Good Job Band

(I guess you have figured out I’m the Grandparent of a Band Member, but hey they really do work very hard. I was in the band a long long long  time ago and sorta remember what it was like)

Donna.

activities at the Center
Posted by bjcc on Monday, July 21 @ 13:15:28 CDT (259 reads)

Storytime has two more Wed. mornings before the  series is over. We have had several children attending. Seems to be a big success. The monthly Sunday meals are doing very well; of course we could always use more diners. So if you live close enough come out and join us for a good home cooked meal and lots of good fellowship.
We have been quite busy rearranging some rooms in the basement. We have also had sevreal huge loads of donations. So with some things from the basement and things from these donations we have lots of new stuff in the Country Store, and several boxes of things put back for the Festival Country Store tent.  Did you know about the Fabric we have for sale? All kinds and yardage. As always there is a nice selection of Clothing upstairs. We also have "Back To School" clothes for the young ones. So grab a friend and just plan a day of shopping here at your local Community Center. When you have shopped till you dropped buy a book for a dime and go home to relax and rest till your next shopping trip.
Don't forget first "Saturday Night Music in the Gym".

Weather
Posted by bjcc on Monday, July 21 @ 12:57:43 CDT (253 reads)

This past few days have been extreamly hotand humid. we could use some rain to cool things off or just make it more humid. we don't need the rain like we all got in June though. our local area was not damaged too bad by the earlier floods. here in our area the damage was mostly farm ground and loss of crops. 15 miles or more from here there was quite a lot of homes and businesses damaged.  we will keep everyone in our thoughts as the cleanup and repairs continue months after the floods.
